About
The Friends Of Stanmore

Who are the Friends of Stanmore?

Abridged to FOS, we are  a group of volunteers who are mainly residents from the local area but also include people from the wider West Midlands.  We are all passionate about wildlife, nature and the environment and we are keen to contribute  to the upkeep and improvement of Stanmore Country Park. We are a happy, friendly bunch and we are inclusive, regardless of age, race, gender or ability. Our members are from a range of backgrounds and include people both working and retired. The group provides a focus for community activities  and has worked hard to foster a sense of place, shared environment and pride in the area. Since the establishment of the FOS in 2012, there has been a noticeable decline in anti-social behaviour within the park (from vandalism to dog fouling) providing demonstrable evidence of enhanced community ownership of the site.

We aim to have work parties throughout the year (bar the month of August), on the second Friday of each month and one weekend day per month.  The FOS delivered 413 hours of voluntary services between October 2017 and September 2018.

What we do

Friends of Stanmore plan to continue to protect our local green space for recreation, wildlife habitat and heritage for future generations. FOS will continue to work alongside Shropshire Council to manage the park with plans to open additional areas within the park to create glades to build diversity including spring flowers and encourage growth and maturity of existing trees.

The ongoing work includes careful woodland and grassland management as well as general parks maintenance. Tasks include:

  • Glade and ride creation to improve biodiversity
  • Tree coppicing
  • Strimming undergrowth
  • Hay raking and strewing to maintain grasslands
  • Wildflower spaces preparation
  • Hedgerow maintenance
  • Maintaining fencing
  • Path improvements
  • Bench maintenance
  • Bird box recording, cleaning and repair
  • Litter picking
  • Litter bin repair and installation

How can you get involved?

Training and equipment will be provided, and you decide how much time you can commit.
