Ambitious conservation plans for a local park needs more volunteers to achieve its vision. During 2020, the pandemic has limited volunteer activities in Stanmore Country Park, an informal green space of 40 hectares located to the east of Bridgnorth, Shropshire. But, the “Friends of Stanmore” Country Park volunteer group, who have partnered with Shropshire Council since 2013 to manage the park, have an ambitious vision for the future of the park, which was recently threatened with potential development as part of housing proposals for Bridgnorth, in addition to building on its success in retaining a Green Flag Community Award in 2021.
Many residents have increased their use of local green spaces during the pandemic perhaps reflecting more home working, additional time created by furlough, as well as restrictions on travel and leisure activities. Whatever the reasons, local residents have clearly been encouraged to explore their local area with renewed enthusiasm and interest. The “Friends of Stanmore” are certainly grateful to have such a beautiful green park on their doorsteps, appreciating the huge benefit that easy access to large green spaces has for mental and physical health.
An ecology report commissioned by Shropshire Council in Summer 2020, has highlighted the surprisingly broad diversity of existing flora and fauna in Stanmore Country Park, which could be greatly enhanced through additional volunteer support together with grant funding. But much more can be done to enhance and support this diversity with an ambitious conservation vision which will need both increased grant funding and volunteer support. The “Friends of Stanmore” are inviting local people to consider if they can contribute to these future ambitions once we are beyond the pandemic restrictions. Andy Howard, chair of the Friends of Stanmore said, “Perhaps you have personally enjoyed Stanmore Country Park and it has helped you to retain some normality in your life during this challenging time, or perhaps you enjoy being outdoors and want the opportunity to meet like-minded people and make a real contribution to your local community. Regardless of whether you have a few hours to spare once a month or once a year, Stanmore Country Park needs you.” The Friends of Stanmore has a Facebook group, which will provide specific dates for future volunteer activities once the pandemic restrictions ease, and more information can also be obtained via the site administrators or Shropshire Council Ranger team based at Severn Valley Country Park.
